DAN WINS THE BYASS CUP
Port Talbot YMCA Shooting Club
Port Talbot YMCA has had a shooting club and competed in Rifle Target Shooting since 1898. Port Talbot YMCA had achieved some success in these competitions winning the Sir. Sydney H Byass Trophy on a number of occasions. It is also noted Port Talbot YMCA won the Glamorgan Air Rifle Target Shooting Championships in 1899, 1901, 1904, 1923 and 1937. Although we are not sure if the club disbanded, we can assume it has been in suspended animation since the out break of World War 11 (1939).
We are therefore please that in December 2008 Port Talbot YMCA Shooting Club was reinstated.
The club is run by a dedicated group of volunteers made up of members from Port Talbot Rifle Club and YMCA Staff. The volunteers have many years experience in the discipline of shooting and have achieved much within the sport both as individuals and as team members.
We carry out our shooting within the gym of the YMCA using air rifles and pistols. The insert picture is one of our members taking advantage of the opportunities we have in firing live ammunition on Government Approved Ranges. (Our member here is shooting a Winchester rifle under the guidance of Chris who is a competition shooter).
Dan attends Europe's biggest Shooting Show.
Daniel Jackson, attended The Newark Shooting and Country man's Show as a representative of Port Talbot YMCA Shooting Club, where Dan was assisting on the air gun coaching range run by the Airgun Training and Education Organisation (ATEO). Dan experienced the life of a shooting coach and realising it's not all gloss and shine. It's all about hard work, living out of a caravan and dealing with the cold weather.
Here we see Dan on the range putting a Brocock Contour through its' paces.
loading and aiming
perfect aim.... pefect shot.
We took on a new Brocock Hunter .22 air rifle in June '09, with our Lucy giving it a go... 10 out of 10, ten shots, 10 bulls eyes.
our Lucy, aged 14.
Lucy shocked her instructors by taking a relaxed position, whilst still maintaining good scores. Lucy showing us shooting can be relaxing, even when you are still aiming high.
Boys in Blue take on our young people... Our Daniel showed the way...
Fun in-house competition with the local boys in blue. What a session, it ended up with one shot, nearest the bull wins. Our Dan hit the 9, just pushing out the boys in blue. A token win for the new shooters of Port Talbot YMCA Shooting Club.
If you want to learn how to target shoot, then come and join the club.
Through the year we will run two in-house competitions and arrange competitions with other youth organisations.
