PORT TALBOT YMCA

NEW WEBSITE UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Formally Known as Aberavon and Port Talbot District YMCA Est 1898.

Sir Anthony Hopkins YMCASir Anthony Hopkins - Patron

Sir Anthony Hopkins, Patron of Port Talbot YMCA

Port Talbot YMCA have been providing services to the young people and the community of Port Talbot since 1898. We were first known as The Aberavon, and Port Talbot District Y.M.C.A, which makes us just over one hundred and ten years old. We have been at our current address since April 1940, with Sir Anthony Hopkins becoming our Patron in 1987. Sir Anthony first set out on his journey in acting whilst one day with nothing in particular popped into the YMCA and the rest is history.

Our web site will inform you of what we have to offer. We are continually up-dating our web-site so please keep returning for new and exciting up-dates.

History

Port Talbot YMCA has a long and established history and has played its part in the community spirit of Aberavon and Port Talbot since 1898. In our early years between 1900's until 1960's we held a Friday dance, with many young couples dancing the night away to big band music. Our Drama Society also entertained the public by providing many plays. In sport athletics and football were sports in which Port Talbot YMCA won many awards. During the War years we provided meals and accommodation to service men returning home. In our old gymnasium we provided accommodation for a number soldiers returning home from Dunkirk. Since 1989 we have been providing Hostel accommodation for young homelessness men, with many passing through our doors gaining valuable skills.

Order of The Red Triangle

The Order of The Red Triangle, awarded to Port Talbot YMCA in 1949 for the service it provided the Armed services and community during World War 2.
